About Us
The Gear Closet is run by Chattanooga-based non-profit TenneSEA, Kids 4 Clean Water. We are the local branch of CaribbeanSEA. We're all about clean water! We do environmental education for students in Hamilton County and numerous islands in the Caribbean, both in the classroom and through camps that we offer.
In Chattanooga, we focus on stormwater, runoff, and pollution of local streams. Chattanooga-area streams are plagued by two big issues: erosion (dirt/silt) from development and sewage from malunctioning sewers and septic tanks. Our solution to these problems is a grassroots approach that starts with raising community awareness and then putting that awareness into action. As such, we focus largely on education in local schools and engaging community groups in protecting their watersheds.
We are working with students at Thrasher Elementary and Scenic Land school to study erosion problems on their campus, and doing fun water-related environmental education activities along the way. We are also starting a county-wide volunteer water monitoring network, community group by community group. An article from nooga.com discussed the training we conducted for Signal Mountain, and we have community training sessions planned for the watersheds of South Chick, North Chick/Soddy Daisy, Lookout Mountain Creek, and Mountain Creek. Funds from the Gear Closet will help us continue and expand the scope of these activities!
